ESB Meter Tails & Cert 1 Upgrades Dublin
DS Electrical provides meter tails upgrades, Cert 1 electrical works and ESB-related electrical upgrades throughout Dublin, helping homeowners bring older electrical installations up to the standard required for today's higher electrical demands.
If you've been told that your existing cables are too small for an EV charger, heat pump, electric shower, fuse board upgrade or other high-powered equipment, we can assess your installation, explain exactly what is required and carry out the necessary electrical work and certification.
What Is a Meter Tails Upgrade?
Meter tails are the main electrical cables that carry electricity between your electricity meter and your home's main distribution board or fuse board.
In many older Dublin homes, these cables were installed at a time when household electricity demand was considerably lower. Modern homes can now have electric showers, induction hobs, EV chargers, heat pumps and other high-powered equipment operating alongside normal household appliances.
Where the existing meter tails are not suitable for the electrical load or current requirements, they may need to be upgraded.
This is commonly referred to as an ESB tails upgrade, meter tails upgrade, mains cable upgrade or Cert 1 upgrade.
Why Would I Need My Meter Tails Upgraded?
For many homeowners, the first time they hear the term "meter tails" is when another electrical upgrade is being planned.
Installing an EV Charger
Buying an electric car is one of the most common reasons homeowners discover that their electrical installation needs upgrading.
Before or during an EV charger installation, it may be identified that the existing meter tails or other parts of the electrical installation aren't suitable for the additional electrical demand.
If you've been told "you need your tails upgraded before we can install your EV charger", DS Electrical can assess the existing installation and carry out the required upgrade.
Installing a Heat Pump
Heat pumps can significantly increase the electrical demand on a property. As part of moving from fossil-fuel heating to an electrically powered heat pump, the existing electrical supply and meter tails may need to be assessed and upgraded.
Installing an Electric Shower
A high-powered electric shower places a substantial additional load on a home's electrical system. Depending on the existing installation, an electrical or tails upgrade may be required.
Fuse Board / Consumer Unit Upgrade
If you're replacing an older fuse board with a modern consumer unit, the electrician may identify that the existing meter tails also need to be brought up to the appropriate standard.
Renovating or Modernising an Older Home
Older properties weren't designed for today's level of electricity consumption. If you're renovating a home and adding modern appliances, electric heating, EV charging or other equipment, it's sensible to have the incoming electrical installation assessed.
What Is a Cert 1 and Why Do I Need One?
Electrical work associated with the main electricity supply can't simply be treated like an ordinary electrical repair.
Where meter tails and associated electrical equipment need to be upgraded, the work must be carried out and certified correctly and may require coordination with ESB Networks and Safe Electric.
DS Electrical can assess the existing installation, identify the work required and guide you through the certification and ESB process.
So, if an EV charger installer, heat-pump installer, electrician or ESB Networks has told you that you need a Cert 1, tails upgrade or mains electrical upgrade, contact us and we'll explain what needs to happen next.
How Does an ESB Tails Upgrade Work?
The exact work required varies from property to property, but typically the process involves:
-
Assessment – We inspect the existing meter tails, fuse board and relevant electrical installation.
-
Recommendation – We explain what needs to be upgraded and why.
-
Electrical Work – DS Electrical carries out the required work on the customer's installation.
-
Certification – The appropriate electrical certification is completed.
-
ESB Coordination – Where ESB Networks needs to carry out work at the meter or electricity supply, this is coordinated as part of the process.
-
Ready for Your New Installation – Once the required upgrade is completed, your property is ready to proceed with the EV charger, heat pump or other electrical work.
Do I Need a Tails Upgrade for My EV Charger?
Not every EV charger installation requires one.
However, if you have an older property or older electrical installation, your EV charger installer may identify that the existing meter tails, fuse board or other electrical equipment needs upgrading before the charger can be safely connected.
If your EV installer has stopped the installation and told you to contact an electrician about meter tails, a Cert 1, fuse board or ESB upgrade, send us the details and we'll advise you on the next step.
